1,2-dichloroethane is a member of the class of chloroethanes substituted by two chloro groups at positions 1 and 2. It has a role as a mutagen, a non-polar solvent and a hepatotoxic agent. Ethylene dichloride appears as a clear colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor. Flash point 56 °F. Denser than water and insoluble in water.
