Octansäure ist eine unverzweigte gesättigte Fettsäure, die Heptan ist, wobei einer der Wasserstoffatome einer terminalen Methylgruppe durch eine Carboxygruppe ersetzt wurde. Octansäure ist auch bekannt als Caprylsäure. Octansäure erscheint als farblose bis hellgelbe Flüssigkeit mit einem milden Geruch. Entzündet sich, kann aber schwer entzündet werden. Korrosiv für Metalle und Gewebe.
