Battery energy storage: which gases do you detect before thermal runaway, and at what alarm levels?

excodexEnglish

Off-gas detection can warn before a lithium-ion cell goes into thermal runaway. Hydrogen, carbon monoxide, electrolyte vapours: which do you monitor, where do you place the sensors and which alarm levels have worked in practice?

This is our main thread on battery off-gas detection, so we would like it to collect concrete experience.

What we hear from projects: hydrogen and carbon monoxide are the most commonly monitored gases; some systems also look for electrolyte solvent vapour, which can appear at the very first venting stage. Alarm levels vary widely between projects, and many are set by the system integrator without much explanation.

    Questions for members:

    • Which gases do you monitor in containerised BESS, and which in indoor battery rooms?
    • Ceiling, cabinet level or inside the rack: where have you placed sensors and why?
    • What alarm levels have worked without nuisance alarms, and what does each level trigger?
