Combustible dust: are Zone 21 and Zone 22 areas being under-classified?
Dust layers, housekeeping and the boundary between Zone 22 and a non-hazardous area are judged very differently from site to site. Share how you apply IEC 60079-10-2 in your industry and where you have seen dust risks overlooked.

Area classification for dust (IEC 60079-10-2) depends heavily on housekeeping assumptions, and that is where sites differ most. One plant treats a dust layer as a release source, another as a cleaning issue.
Some questions to compare practice:
- Do you include housekeeping frequency and accepted layer thickness in the classification document itself?
- Where have you seen the boundary between Zone 22 and a non-hazardous area drawn too optimistically?
- In silos, filters and bucket elevators, do you classify inside and outside separately?
Industries differ a lot here: food, wood, metal powders, pharmaceuticals. Please mention your industry when you reply, it makes the answers much more useful.
